The Graduate Programs of Massachusetts College of Art and Design, the premier independent public university of art and design in the US, offers three MFA programs in the theory and practice of digital, time-based, conceptual, and performance art. The online application deadline for all programs is January 15th.
MFA Studio for Interrelated Media (SIM)
SIM is a place where ideas grow into new art forms. The full-time 2-year MFA program is project-based, developing concepts that are realized using audio, video, performance, interactive media, computer-controlled installation, dance and spoken word. Faculty include Denise Marika, whose art incorporates video, installation, and performance elements; Dana Moser, who works with computer-controlled media, video production, and Internet art; John Holland (emeritus), an electronic music composer and sound artist; Nita Sturiale, whose art encompasses audience participation and locative technologies; Elaine Buckholtz, an inter-media and light-installation artist; and sound-artist, Eric Freeman, . A one-year post-baccalaureate program is also offered.
MFA Institute for Dynamic Media
The Dynamic Media Institute, led by Jan Kubasiewicz, celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. DMI explores the role and possibilities of dynamic media in communication design. Students come from diverse disciplines (architects, industrial designers, programmers, engineers, filmmakers, musicians, anthropologists, photographers, fine artists, and graphic designers), reflecting the program’s cross-disciplinary approach. The MFA is offered in three tracks: full-time in four semesters; part-time in five semesters; or part-time in six semesters. A one-year post-baccalaureate program is also offered.
MFA Film/Video
The Film/Video MFA redefines what it means to be an artist working with the moving image. The program develops an individualized perspective on the medium that can be political, conceptual, abstract, or visceral, with advanced skills in video and film production to make the vision real. Faculty include Michelle Handelman, Ericka Beckman, Gretchen Skogerson, Saul Levine, and Soon-Mi Yoo. A one-year post-baccalaureate program is also offered.
