View information in ArabicAshkal Alwan is pleased to launch its first Open Call for Applications for the 2011-2012 Home Workspace Program with Resident Artist/Professor Emily Jacir.Geared towards developing an interdisciplinary approach to arts education, the Home Workspace Program targets emerging artists and cultural practitioners who want to develop their skills and practice in a critically supportive environment in Beirut.
The Home Workspace Program is an 11-month, independent, post-academic program with 10-15 participants per year from Lebanon and around the world. The curriculum consists of workshops and seminars with the Resident Artist/Professor and invited guests.
Conceived as part-incubator, part-production space, the Program provides a framework for research and production for participants, with space and resources in a facility that includes studios, audiovisual editing suites, performance and exhibition spaces, and a multimedia library. Additional support is provided by a network of individuals and venues around the city, helping participants build a productive relationship with the locale of Beirut.
Participants are expected to reside in Beirut for 11 months, to participate actively in the various activities initiated by the Resident and Visiting Artists/ Professors, and to develop and produce a project. Each participant is moreover provided with a production stipend.
FACULTY & CURRICULUM
• Resident Artist/Professor
Each year, the Curricular Committee of the Home Workspace Program invites an artist, filmmaker, thinker, writer or other to propose a program of research and study. The Resident Artist/Professor subsequently leads the year’s program and works closely with the selected participants.
Throughout the year, the Resident Artist/Professor invites several Visiting Artists/Professors to give workshops and/or seminars as part of her/his program. The Resident Artist/Professor is also invited to develop a project during her/his residency in the Home Workspace, and to give a presentation of her/his work to the Beirut public.
The Resident Artist/Professor for the 2011-2012 Home Workspace Program is Emily Jacir.
• Curricular Committee (CC)
The Curricular Committee defines the curricular direction of the Home Workspace Program. Each year, the CC invites the Resident Artist/Professor and assists her/him in shaping the year’s program.
Current members of the CC are Joana Hadjithomas, Walid Raad, Khalil Rabah, Lina Saneh and Gregory Sholette.
ELIGIBILITY
• Artists working in any visual arts medium, including video, film, performance, sound, installation, photography, painting and sculpture
• Cultural practitioners including writers, curators, thinkers, critics and academics
• Applicants who have completed undergraduate or graduate arts, arts-related or cultural studies, formal academic training or have equivalent experience
• Applications from Lebanon, the Arab region and the world are all welcome; Ashkal Alwan will make visa arrangements when necessary for selected applicants
• Applicants should have a working knowledge of Arabic and/or English in order to follow the program
SCHOLARITY & TUITION
• Tuition is free to all applicants selected to the Home Workspace Program.
• All participants will be granted a production stipend equivalent with which to develop their project(s).
• International participants should assume travel costs to and from Beirut, as well as their living costs in Lebanon for the duration of the curricular year.
• Limited financial support may be made available to participants on a need-basis. Applicants wishing to apply for such support from Ashkal Alwan should make this clear in their application.
• Participants are encouraged to apply for funding from their home countries or other sources to support their travel and residency in Beirut.
