New Methods is a three-day symposium examining the practices of contemporary arts organizations that provide essential educational and professional development to local artistic communities in Latin America.  The symposium will provide an insider’s view into the diverse art scenes and complexities of working in the region, and through critical discussions with key figures working today, will expand the dialogue about these organizations, their perspectives, and their contexts.

Participating organizations include:
Centro de Investigaciones Artisticas, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Lugar a Dudas, Cali, Colombia
Proyectos Ultravioleta, Guatemala City, Guatemala
Casa Tres Patios, Medellin, Colombia
SOMA, Mexico City, Mexico
Capacete, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Beta-Local, San Juan, Puerto Rico
Kiosko Galeria, Santa Cruz, Bolivia

A series of in-depth discussions will take place on May 4, 5, and 6 at MOCA.  Speakers will include: Eduardo Abaroa, Helmut Batista, Pablo Helguera, Roberto Jacoby, Michy Marxuach, Oscar Munoz, Yoshua Okon, Judi Werthein, and others.

On May 6 at 6:30 pm, Dr. George Yudice, Professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the University of Miami, will present MOCA’s Dr. Sanford L. and Dolores Ziff Lecture.  Dr. Yudice is one of the foremost Latin Americanists whose research interests include cultural policy, globalization, transnational processes, and the role of intellectuals, artists, and activists in national and transnational institutions.

The symposium will be the first opportunity for leaders from the participating organizations to meet together in the United States and publicly present their practices. Participating organizations focus on community building in their region; promote education of practicing artists through the facilitation of lectures and discussions about contemporary art; invest in exchange by presenting international and guest artists, lectures, and artist residency programs; and maintain non-profit status or adhere to non-profit ideals.

New Methods is presented by the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami and is organized by MOCA Associate Curator Ruba Katrib.

Major support for New Methods was provided by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Additional support was provided by Fundación/Colección Jumex, Arts Collaboratory, Hal Philipps, Ray Ellen and Allan Yarkin, Monica Kalpakian, and Amy Dean and Alan Kluger.  Media sponsorship is provided by ArtNexus.
