2012 Continuing Education Offerings at Christie’s Education, New York

In the Christie’s Art Business Course prominent art world leaders guide students through lectures and discussions designed to provide an in-depth understanding of the practical and theoretical knowledge that underpins today’s global art market. Students are exposed to the nature of the professional art world, its players, network effects, and the economic, institutional, legal and ethical contexts that shape and structure the art market as a business.

The course is modularized with each module designed to complement one another to gain an overall picture of the industry. Completion of all five modules results in the award of a Certificate. Each module is composed of five evening sessions running weekly on Wednesday evenings from 6–8pm.

Module 3: Art and Valuation
January 11–February 8, 2012
Explore an essential tool of the art trade—valuation—through lectures on authentication, appraisals and provenance.

Module 4: The Auction House
February 15–March 14, 2012
Delve into the art world by participating in a mock auction and gaining a behind-the-scenes view of Christie’s New York.

Module 5: The Art World Today
April 4–May 2, 2012
Discover the interconnectivity of the art world and the impact various sectors—museums, galleries and art fairs—have on one another.

Navigating the New York Art Fairs—Wednesday March 7th through Friday March 9th
Join Christie’s Education, New York on an intimate and exclusive course coinciding with The Armory Show in New York, America’s leading art fair. Students will hear lectures about trends in contemporary art, learn about the market for contemporary art, and take guided tours of the Armory Art Fair as well as some of the Satellite Fairs scheduled for Armory Week.

Global Contemporary Art; Focus on China—Friday March 10th and Saturday March 11th
Chinese Contemporary Art went from relative obscurity to center of the international stage in the space of a decade. Today major Chinese artists have taken their place as world-class art stars. This course will serve as a valuable encapsulation of this phenomenon. Lectures will address Chinese art from the 1970s through the present. Major internationally known Chinese artists including Cai Guo-Qiang, Huang Yong Ping, Xu Bing, Gu Wenda and Zhang Huan will be discussed from an historical as well as a market perspective by leading experts in the field. The class will include a private sale walkthrough of the contemporary Chinese art on preview at Christie’s Rockefeller Center, with a Christie’s specialist. This course inaugurates a new series of courses on global contemporary art at Christie’s Education.

Special Topics in 19th and 20th Century Jewelry—Thursday April 12th and Friday April 13th
Christie’s Education and Christie’s Jewelry Department are pleased to announce the return of our highly popular annual course, Special Topics in 19th and 20th Century Jewelry. This intensive master class will approach 19th and 20th century jewelry from a variety of angles. Each day will consist of morning lectures and afternoon field studies. Topics covered will range from the social significance of jewelry to explorations of particular movements and major houses. An authority on precious stones will lecture on gem valuation. Trips may include workshop visits and private museum tours. There will be a walkthrough of the Christie’s sale with a Christie’s specialist. Lunch and ground transportation will be provided.
