Exhibition curator: Ariella Wolens
In dedication to the next generation of artists under 30 in London, New End Art Foundation are exhibiting a show of 16 new artists throughout April 2012 at the New End Art Gallery in North London.
The criteria for artists selected to exhibit were simple: a visceral reaction to their work and an elegantly articulated analysis. Artists have been included from a variety of backgrounds and schools, working across a diverse range of media.
In addition, it is also particularly important to New End Art Foundation, a recently established community interest company, to adequately represent female artists. The number of female artists given attention for the merits of their work alone—rather than their persona within the art world—remains disproportionately low. New End is working to help the next generation of artists to redress this imbalance, focusing on the quality of the work produced by female artists, rather than their gender.
The exhibition includes artwork by a number of promising new names, such as an the pictured Baby sculpture, constructed out of expanding foam by Italian/ Greek Cypriot Slade School of Fine Art student, Miranda Pissarides. Her structure is manifested out of a self created form. The industrial material of expanding foam is interpreted as sculpture through processes of layering and application of pigment.
The crevices and curves of the form allow for a spectrum of colour intensity to be vacillate across the formation, with pale bulges set against deep fuschia crevices. The vertical ascension of the work offers it a totemic resonance whilst simultaneously suggesting a naturalistic appearance of a spongey coral, which takes on an other worldly through Pissarides’ exploration of colour.

New End Curator
Ariella Wolens is a London-based writer and curator. Having received her BA in Art History from UCL in 2011, Ariella has since published articles and interviews in Acne Paper, i-D and Hot and Cool magazine. This September she will begin her Masters in Modern Art: Curating and Curatorial Studies at Columbia University in New York. Ariella founded New End Art Foundation in 2011.
