SOMA Art Program: call for applications

SOMA

Founded by a group of contemporary artists working in Mexico and abroad, SOMA is an organization in Mexico City dedicated to intercultural exchange.

SOMA offers a two-year program for training contemporary artists based on continuous exchange between young artists and established professionals through courses, workshops, one-on-one critiques and studio visits. SOMA’s faculty comprises artists, theorists, and curators with extensive experience in their fields, both nationally and internationally.

SOMA believes in building a platform that facilitates investigation into what art can be and how it can operate in different contexts. The program seeks to provide a space for a diversity of discussion, collective interaction and critical thinking, taking into account the many creative communities in Mexico City.

This program is for studuents who have already completed a bachelors degree in visual arts or related studies.

All courses are in Spanish. Open call for applications:
Applicants are selected by a faculty committee.
Applications are due November 23rd, 2012.

Program objectives:
- Foster an environment for dynamic discussion where students are challenged to produce their best work through exchange and communication with their peers.
– Constantly challenge what art can be and do.
– Investigate the possibilities and importance of various artistic disciplines allowing them the ability to build and transform their context.
– Create an educational platform in which peers assist one another in developing content and processes of research.
– Highlight the relevance and effect of the political and social environment on artistic practice
– Stimulate dialogue and collaboration, as well as confront the differences between artists and cultural producers of different generations.
– Open channels of communication between various disciplines and studies, beyond those typically associated with artistic production: muscicians, architects, curators, critics, filmmakers, scientists, and theorists.
– Promote and facilitate contact among young artists and established critics and curators.
– Encourage and complement students’ projects, whether they are works of art, diffusion spaces, and research projects.
– Help promote the work of young artists while understanding the art of the past in new and novel ways.

Financial support:
All students accepted into the program area are granted a scholarship of 70% of the total cost of attendance. These scholarships are generously funded by our sponsors.
