Haus Der Kunst is seeking accomplished, creative, and ambitious team members for the positions of:
Head of External Affairs, Marketing & Development Officer, and Team Assistant External Affairs

As a non-collecting public museum and a key global center for contemporary art located in Munich, Germany, Haus der Kunst is renowned for its incisive and rigorous exploration of the diverse histories of contemporary art based on a foundation of focused exhibitions, research, and education. With the 75th anniversary of its founding, and the recently announced planning phase for a 58 million euro renovation of the historical architecture, the museum is at a crucial point of growth and transformation, with an expanded program of multidisciplinary exhibitions, annual commissions of contemporary art, fellowship programs, education, and research.

With these ongoing and exciting developments, Haus der Kunst is seeking several dynamic, motivated team members with proven track records in the fields of development, marketing, and communication in contemporary art and culture to join the newly organized department of External Affairs.

Head of External Affairs
Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Actively design, develop, and execute a comprehensive and cohesive structure for communicating the museum’s mission and programs to the diverse publics and stakeholders of Haus der Kunst
  • Supervise and guide the External Affairs team consisting of Press/ Communications, Marketing/Development, Digital Communication/Social Media, Mediation/Visitor Relations and the Team Assistant
  • Identify and liaise with key partners and stakeholders in order to develop relevant support structures on all channels, and be a strong brand advocate and company ambassador
  • Ensure consistency of style and approach across all areas of External Affairs
  • Design and develop communication means to increase international awareness, visitor attendance, and broaden public interaction and engagement with Haus der Kunst programs
  • As a member of the Senior Management Team, report to the Director of Haus der Kunst and actively share responsibility in further shaping the development of the institution as a highly reputable center for contemporary art with international relevance

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Proven track record and experience in leading a strong team
  • Demonstrated knowledge and accomplishments in all areas of External Affairs, especially in a cultural institution and its offerings to the public and the stakeholders of the institution as well as in structuring, coordinating, and cultivating contacts within several supporting layers
  • Extraordinary interpersonal skills—able to build and maintain relationships both internally and externally
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills, management of budgets—attention to detail; goal-oriented workstyle
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Fluent written and spoken German and English are essential. Further language skills would be advantageous
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Graduate degree with major in Communications or equivalent qualification
  • Able to work independently as well as a part of a team: strong team player

Marketing & Development Officer
The Marketing & Development Officer will work in the External Affairs Department which consists of the three additional areas Digital Communication/Social Media, Mediation/Visitor Relations, Press/ Communication, and the Team Assistant.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Head of External Affairs in the development, implementation and assessment of marketing, advertising, communication, promotional and community-oriented strategies and campaigns, as well as long-term sponsoring structures.
  • Support creative solutions to position Haus der Kunst as a leading center of contemporary art; promote generic and key market messages in line with the mission and the strategy of Haus der Kunst.
  • Deliver annual marketing plans in cohesion with the overall plan of the External Affairs Department to support ongoing programs and the launch of new projects/exhibitions, and to increase public awareness and visitor attendance.
  • Leverage and assess current development structures, and coordinate strategic initiatives related to the funding and supporting structures of Haus der Kunst
  • Build, cultivate and coordinate strong relationships with key partners and be a strong brand advocate and institutional ambassador
  • In collaboration with members of External Affairs, develop new programs, products and offerings for the public at large as well as specific target groups; consider possible brand visibility opportunities and relevant sales support merchandise; actively manage timely production of marketing material

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Proven track record in the field of marketing and development/ sponsoring
  • Demonstrated accomplishments in marketing a cultural institution and its offerings to the public and the stakeholders of the institution as well as in structuring, coordinating, and cultivating contacts within several supporting layers
  • Extraordinary interpersonal skills—able to build and maintain relationships both internally and externally
  • Graduate degree with major in Communications/Marketing or equivalent qualification
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Fluent written and spoken German and English are essential. Further language skills would be advantageous
  • Excellent analytical skills: the ability to collect and interpret numerical/financial data, as well as qualitative market research data
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills—good attention to detail; goal-oriented work style
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team: strong team player

Team Assistant External Affairs
This part-time position assists the Head of External Affairs, a member of the Senior Management, and supports the External Affairs team, which consists of four additional colleagues responsible for Digital Communication/Social Media, Marketing/Development, Mediation/Visitor Relations, and Press/Communications.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Executive Assistant to Head of External Affairs
  • Support the External Affairs department with a variety of projects as needed
  • Perform research for the needs of the department
  • Maintain database of targeted marketing and sales leads
  • Support External Affairs with their diverse reports
  • Accomplish related External Affairs and organizational needs as required
  • Office Manager duties, such as travel planning, scheduling meetings, preparing and assembling materials for meetings

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Graduate degree with a relevant major in Communications, Cultural Management or equivalent qualification
  • Initial experiences in the field of External Affairs
  • Very good interpersonal skills—ability to build and maintain relationships both internally and externally
  • Proven interest in cultural exchange
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent written and spoken German and English. Further language skills would be advantageous
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills—great attention to detail; goal-oriented work style
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team: strong team player
