The Art Criticism & Writing Lecture Series and “Critical Information” Conference at SVA

The Art Criticism & Writing Lecture Series at the School of Visual Arts in New York City is now in its eighth season at the SVA Theatre on 23rd Street in Chelsea. Over the past four years, it has become one of the most popular lecture series in New York, welcoming writers like Susan Buck-Morss, Michael Taussig, Dave Hickey, Peter Schjeldahl, Ann Lauterbach, Boris Groys, Cuauhtémoc Medina, Lynne Tillman, Lucy Lippard, T. J. Clark, Linda Nochlin, Rob Storr, David Graeber, and Elaine Scarry to our stage.

The Fall 2012 season includes:

Marcus Boon, “Abject Future: Tyler the Creator, Azealia Banks, and the Politics of Vibration,” September 27, 2012;

Elaine Scarry, “Beauty and the Pact of Aliveness,” October 11, 2012;

Luc Sante, “The Genius of the System, November 15, 2012; and

Debra Bricker Balken, “Harold Rosenberg and the Twilight of the Intellectuals,” December 13, 2012.

All lectures are free and open to the public on Thursday nights at 7pm in the SVA Theatre at 333 West 23rd Street (between 8th and 9th Avenues).

“Critical Information” is an interdisciplinar graduate student conference providing a critical forum for current scholarship exploring the junctures of media, theory, criticism, and the visual arts. Panels include “Revolution 101/2012″; “Still, Mediated and Moving: The Image Today and Its Effects on Time and Space”; “Animism Anew: New Media and the Speaking Object”; “Handmade in the Information Age”; “The Writing on the Wall: Street Art, Hacktivism, and Subversive Inspiration”; and “Algorithmic Thought and Memory.” Faculty advisor is Russet Lederman.

All events are free and open to the public.

Claire Bishop is Associate Professor in the PhD Program in Art History at CUNY Graduate Center, New York.  Her publications include Installation Art: A Critical History (Tate/Routledge, 2005) and Artificial Hells: Participatory Art and the Politics of Spectatorship (Verso, 2012), and the edited anthology Participation (2006).  Her curatorial projects include the performance exhibition Double Agent at the ICA, London (2008) and the PRELUDE.11 performance festival at CUNY Graduate Center (2011). She is a regular contributor to Artforum.
The Art Criticism & Writing graduate program at SVA offers a two-year course of study leading to an MFA degree. For students who want to improve their writing and advance their knowledge of contemporary art, theory, literature, and history, this concentrated program offers seminars taught by prominent critics, editors, philosophers, poets, and artists, including Michael Brenson, Ann Lauterbach, Nancy Princenthal, Lynne Tillman, Claudia La Rocco, Alan Gilbert, William Benton, Phong Bui, Trinie Dalton, Munro Galloway, and Lucy Raven.
