The School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s (SAIC) Master of Design in Fashion, Body & Garment program closely examines and reimagines the nature and potentiality of fashion through explorations in studio and intensive immersion in theory. The program’s interdisciplinary basis allows for limitless opportunities to engage in a vibrant environment of contemporary art making and scholarship, forming connections between fashion and other artistic practices.

• The Master of Design in Fashion, Body & Garment curriculum is a combination of design studios, topical seminars, self-directed research, technical labs, design history and theory courses, and a wide range of elective courses, including performance, film, new media, writing, and sculpture.

• SAIC’s Fashion faculty is composed of renowned artists, designers, design historians, and professionals in the field. Fashion alumni include such notable designers as Halston, Cynthia Rowley, Lawrence Steele, J. Morgan Puett, Eunwha Kim, Shane Gabier and Christopher Peters (Creatures of the Wind), Maria Pinto, Gary Graham, and Matthew Ames.

• SAIC’s Fashion program is housed in the newly renovated and expansive Sage Studios for Fashion Design housing 200 dress forms, 60 industrial machines, 10 sergers, 2 skiving machines, 2 blind stitch machines, 1 pearl edger, 1 button hold, a shoe machine lab, graduate studios, and a state-of-the-art computer lab.

• Other resources include access to the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago museum, and the department’s Fashion Resource Center, a hands-on fashion study collection featuring designer garments supported by an extensive visual and print collection.
