The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) offers the Master of Arts in Critical Studies Program, a one-year, 30-credit program that provides a pathway to professional practice or further study at the doctoral level through an in-depth grounding in critical theory and analysis.  The program, uniquely set in a top-ranked college of art and design, influences the discussion in the context of contemporary cultural production.

The Master of Arts in Critical Studies program combines students’ interests in the creative arts with a solid grounding in the liberal arts as they gain advanced research and writing skills along with knowledge of aesthetics, art and cultural history, and critical theory in preparation for making significant contributions to critical discourse connected to visual arts, design, film, performance, and other forms of artistic production.

This intensive program is taught by an accomplished faculty, all whom hold terminal degrees from leading institutions, and who are practitioners in a range of fields including art history and criticism, critical theory, film studies, philosophy, literature, curatorial studies, and studio practice. Each year, students also benefit from the Graduate Colloquium Speakers series that brings notable artists and scholars to campus.
The Master of Arts prepares students for careers influencing culture through critical expression—as writers, curators, critics, journalists, educators, or resident experts at academic, cultural or public institutions.

Program faculty hold PhD’s from Oxford University, Yale University, University of Minnesota, Purdue University, City University of New York, Emory University, Bryn Mawr College, Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University and Cambridge University.

Degree plans can be customized by adding a professional development internship at a cultural institution in Baltimore, Washington D.C. or Philadelphia.

Priority application deadline: January 15, 2013. Final deadline: April 1, 2013. For more information or to apply, please visit www.mica.edu/criticalstudiesma.
