Arts School Lab 2013 is a two-week summer school focused on collaboration, creativity and encounters with everyday life. It is an intensive learning programme intended to bring together creative people with an active curiosity about ideas and action through the arts.
Core Tutors include filmmaker and director Penny Woolcock, artist and co-founder of muf architecture/art, and Katherine Clark.

Arts School Lab explores the idea of ‘unlearning’ conventions and education through conversation and practical experiences. This year’s project follows on from the success of Arts School Lab 2012, which explored art and social change informed by educational ideas from the Bauhaus (1919–33). This year, the project is influenced by ideas from Black Mountain College (1933–54), the American avant-garde arts school centred on freedom and experimental education. The principle of this arts education was to reconnect art with life, educating the whole person to become fully awake to life.
Arts School Lab requires an open mind. Participants will exercise courage as well as creativity. Attendance is required every day and some evenings for the whole two-week programme (17 to 28 June, inclusive). Activities will take place around the Barbican Centre and East London. You will need to make your own accommodation and travel arrangements. All sessions will be in English.
Places cost 150 GBP per person; a limited number of bursaries are available.

Arts School Lab is curated by Emma Ridgway. It is one of many events in the LAB programme by Barbican Guildhall Creative Learning, which offers creative development opportunities for professionals through collaborative learning. The year-round programme includes Pit Labs (research and development time in the Barbican Pit Theatre), Weekend Labs (two-day in-depth practical explorations of performance work from the Barbican arts programme), and Arts School Lab (an annual two-week interdisciplinary event devised with world-class artists/directors/thinkers).
