RUPERT is an educational exhibition center devoted to establishing close cooperation between artists, thinkers, researchers, and other cultural actors through interdisciplinary programs and residencies. A knowledge-based platform for innovative creative production, RUPERT integrates with the social and cultural framework of the city of Vilnius while simultaneously supporting a strong international focus.

RUPERT’s mission manifests in three distinct but closely linked channels: first, the educational program offers eight to ten participants the chance to develop project ideas and make connections with professionals in the field through regular lectures and workshops. It provides the invaluable opportunity for collaborative education, forging new international networks. This degree-less, non-academic program is proudly career-oriented and supplemented by its transdisciplinary approach. RUPERT’s second educational series begins in October 2013 and will last until June 2014.

Second, RUPERT offers a residency program in which the participants develop their individual projects, giving them the opportunity to immerse themselves in Vilnius. Through collaboration, participants will establish fruitful connections with RUPERT’s educational program and the artistic sphere of the region. RUPERT’s residencies will provide both Lithuanian and foreign participants with the opportunity to live and work in Vilnius for a minimum of ten weeks.

Finally, an unconventional exhibition program will serve as the basis for a wide range of public programs and activities exploring art and its role in contemporary society. The gallery is conceived as a space of support for the educational program—a laboratory that will complement topics covered by workshops and lectures.

Through its research and development-oriented programs, RUPERT supports international thinkers in realizing their projects and establishing their creative careers on an international scale. It focuses on contemporary artistic and curatorial practices but remains close to an extensive range of disciplines, while encouraging trans-disciplinarity.

Juan de Nieves appointed new Director of RUPERT
Juan de Nieves (b. 1964, Spain) is a curator and art critic formerly based in Madrid. Trained as an art historian at the University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, de Nieves was chosen due to his international experience, his competence, and his knowledge of founding and directing artistic institutions, in order to continue and renew the high-value, internationally oriented focus of RUPERT.

From 1994 and 1998, de Nieves was a curator at Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea (CGAC) in Santiago de Compostela, and between 1999 and 2005 curator for the Espai d’Art Contemporani de Castelló (EACC). Between 2005 and 2009 he was the director of EACC, where he developed a program focused on the production of site-specific pieces related to their urban and socio-cultural contexts (Daniel Buren, Miguel Ventura, Angel Vergara, John Knight, Antoni Miralda, and Josep María Martin, among others), as well as programming exhibitions that explored on the language of video and cinema (Paul Sharits, Ulrike Ottinger) along with artist and filmmaker workshops and hugely successful public arts projects.

As an independent curator, he has curated exhibitions of Rosa Barba, Isidoro Valcárcel Medina, and Jorge Barbi, among others.

De Nieves brings nearly 20 years of experience conceiving and producing innovative curatorial projects that focus on the creation and circulation of contemporary art in both the local and global arena.
