The Film and Digital Media Department (film.ucsc.edu) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a position in production with a solid foundation in the theory and history of social documentation at the Assistant Professor (tenure-track) level. We seek an accomplished and influential filmmaker and media artist of socially engaging non-fiction work with an exhibition track record in film festivals, museums, new media and/or public television whose modes of production and research intersect with and expand upon the department’s current strengths: social documentary and nonfiction forms; multiplatform media engaging issues of social justice and political activism; and/or critical analysis media representation, documentary forms and transmedia platforms. Applicants should be able to contribute to one or more of the following areas of social documentary production, including video, photography, editing, sound design, lighting and multiplatform storytelling. We have a preference for candidates with expertise in documentary video production, social science analysis and professional development. We have a particular interest in candidates with international expertise, given the international and diversity-focused concerns of the Social Documentation Program. Possible related areas of research and teaching might include graduate and undergraduate social documentary critical studies, production across cinematic genres, video and sound editing production and/or multiplatform and transmedia documentary.
We seek candidates with experience or demonstrated potential for university teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including masters or doctoral supervision. The Film & Digital Media Department offers an M.A. in Social Documentation (film.ucsc.edu/socdoc) aimed at training documentarians in creative and scholarly approaches to social change, media representation, and marginalized cultures; a Ph.D. (film.ucsc.edu/phd_program) designed to challenge traditional borders between creative and critical practice; and a B.A. that emphasizes both critical studies and production. Our curriculum addresses the history, theory and production of film, television, video and digital media across a range of global and historical contexts. The program currently serves approximately five hundred undergraduate majors, eighteen doctoral students, and fifteen master’s students. The Film & Digital Media Department is in the Division of the Arts (arts.ucsc.edu), which also includes Departments of Art, History of Art and Visual Culture, Music, Theater Arts, the M.F.A. Program in Digital Arts and New Media, and Ph.D. programs in Music and Visual Studies. There are opportunities for scholarly, creative and teaching connections in these areas, as well as with colleagues and programs in the Humanities and Social Sciences divisions and the School of Engineering. The Arts Division supports faculty research through the Arts Research Institute (artsresearch.ucsc.edu/ari); the campus supports research and teaching with grants awarded by the Committee on Research, the Committee on Teaching, and other groups.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience
Basic qualifications: M.F.A. in relevant field of study or a demonstrated record of social documentary or creative work as evidenced by a national and/or international record of exhibition in museums, galleries, film and new media festivals, public television and/or publication in journals.
Preferred qualifications: University teaching experience; graduate-level teaching; graduate student supervision and mentoring. Demonstrated contributions to diversity through research, teaching and/or service.
