The Master of Fine Arts Painting and Drawing program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) offers you a wide range of traditional and experimental approaches to developing an ongoing and committed art practice. You can investigate ideas through individual studio practice as well as through the critical and historical frameworks necessary to inform your aesthetic and conceptual choices.
In addition to your studio work, the MFA: Painting and Drawing degree program offers the following opportunities:
– Rigorous Art History, Theory, and Criticism classes, required during the course of study, further provide you with historic and contemporary models of making and thinking
– Painting and Drawing facultymembers include more than 30 graduate instructors—all practicing artists—who have been awarded grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Fulbright Program, and the Tiffany, Ford, Guggenheim, Warhol, and Newhouse Foundations, as well as other regional, national, and international honors. Faculty work appears in galleries and museums throughout the world.
– Interdisciplinary seminars also allow students to show and discuss their work with faculty and students from across the studio areas, as well as from other graduate programs. The resulting exchanges allow MFA students to view and critique a wide variety of art and the many generative approaches to studio practice and become fluent in discussing their own work with peers both in and out of their particular fields.
– A history of alumni achieving a high level of success in their careers, earning exhibitions in world-renowned galleries, teaching positions at leading institutions, and awards and prizes reflecting excellence in their field. Recent alumni include Rosy Keyser, Rebecca Morris, Angel Otero, Zak Prekop, Amanda Ross-Ho, and Jeni Spota.
– A departmentalvisiting artist series, which welcomes a variety of visiting artists, curators, and critics who combine lectures with individual and group critiques with graduate students. Recent visitors include Chris Kraus, Sean Landers, Monique Prieto, and Wendy White.
– Large, well-lit classrooms and critique spaces and individual studios where students develop their practice, hold open discussions, engage in critical dialogue, and test strategies for exhibiting and presenting work
– Access to the Art Institute of Chicago’srenowned collection and hundreds of other resources offered to SAIC students
– Access to crucial equipment and facilities, including free figure model sessions, laser cutters, video and audio editing equipment, professional-grade digital cameras and light kits, and affordable digital printing
– Exhibition opportunities in SAIC’s Student Union Galleries (SUGs), Sullivan Galleries, as well as myriad alternative venues across Chicago
