Job Title: Head, Department of Art
Position Summary
The Department of Art at the University of Oregon is seeking a dynamic leader with a strong record of accomplishment in teaching, creative research, and administrative work for the position of Department Head and Associate or Full Professor (the Department Head position is the endowed Ann Swindells Chair).  The new Head will join an ambitious, progressive, and committed faculty as an active practitioner, collaborative worker, and experienced leader.  Engaged in a decade of positive and purposeful change, the Department seeks a leader who will continue to imagine, evolve, and realize possibilities for the future.

Together with the faculty, the Head of the Art Department is responsible for leadership and administration of the Department, including strategic planning, budget, personnel, facilities, and curriculum.  Candidates must be open thinkers, careful listeners, inclusive leaders, and be able to work with diverse groups and points of view.  The Head must have a deep commitment to creative practice and critical inquiry, as well as the ability to contribute to, and advocate for, a vibrant research environment within the Department.  Understanding the pedagogical mission and unique aspects of engaged studio teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels is critical.  The Head is expected to have an ongoing role in teaching; the current load is one course per academic year as well as individualized independent studies. Outreach and development responsibilities include raising the visibility of the program, advocating for the Department within the University, communicating with external stakeholders, and establishing development priorities.

Institutional context
The Department of Art is one of the two largest departments within the School of Architecture and Allied Arts (A&AA), which also includes Architecture, the History of Art and Architecture, Arts Administration, Product Design, Landscape Architecture, Historic Preservation, and the Department of Planning, Public Policy, and Management.  With more than 400 undergraduates and 30 graduate students, the Art Department offers BA/BS, BFA and MFA degrees in media including ceramics, digital arts, fibers, jewelry and metalsmithing, painting and drawing, photography, printmaking, and sculpture.  The Department includes 22 tenure-track faculty, eight Career Instructors, an average of seven adjunct instructors per academic year, three office support staff, and additional public programming, technical and student support staff. The Art Department Head reports to the Dean and works closely with other A&AA Heads through an administrative council that contributes to overall leadership and interdisciplinary collaboration within the School.  In addition to the Eugene campus, the School maintains programs in Portland, Oregon, including our Digital Arts BFA and an experimental gallery, the White Box.
