Your time off is hard-earned and precious. How will you spend it this year? By working on a passion project? Studying a new or long-held interest? Traveling somewhere you’ve never been? Why not all of the above?

For over 30 years, the School of Visual Arts has offered Arts Abroad, a selection of innovative travel and educational programs that provide professionals, teachers and students alike the opportunity to see the world, focus on their work, renew their passions—and possibly earn college credit along the way. Wherever you choose to go, whatever you choose to do, our accomplished faculty will lead you on an inspiring and rewarding adventure.

Interior Design in Italy: Florence & Venice
May 18–June 1
Experience the architecture and design of the Italian Renaissance and investigate how these concepts can be applied to contemporary design in this workshop, which includes visits to the historic sites and notable modern structures of two of Italy’s most picturesque destinations.

Masters Workshop: Design History, Theory & Practice in Rome
May 25–June 8
Study architecture, art, graphic design and typography—and collaborate with Italian and American designers, historians and publishers—in the birthplace of Western typographic tradition and one of the world’s great cities.

Art History in Southern France
May 30–June 12
Immerse yourself in the grandeur of Provence through this on-site study of Roman ruins, Romanesque architecture and works by van Gogh and Cézanne, among other artists.

Photography Workshop in Southern France
May 30–June 13
Hone your skills as you photograph the natural and cultural wonders of Provence, from its outdoor markets to its medieval architecture to its river delta, salt marshes and ochre-colored cliffs.

Shanghai Photography Workshop: Create, Connect, Exchange, Network
June 7–July 5
Explore and photograph in Shanghai, an ever-changing megalopolis and art-world hub; meet with the city’s curators and gallerists; and participate in individual and group critiques in this four-week program.

Action Surf Photography: Destination Bali
June 9–20
Capture the action of surfing while exploring the breathtaking beauty of Bali’s culture, beaches, and biodiversity. Refine your personal vision through the genres of surf and lifestyle photography in a breathtaking and mystical setting.

Painting in Barcelona
June 25–July 14
Hone your skills or explore new directions in your art while working in the spacious studios of the Escola Superior de Disseny i Art Llotja, in the beautiful Mediterranean city of Barcelona.

Portrait and Fashion Photography in Barcelona
July 5–16
Photograph models on location and in the studio in the Mediterranean city of Barcelona, long a top destination for fashion advertising and editorials.

Food Design in France
July 6–13
Study the aesthetics, ethics, history and politics of food and its preparation in the kitchens of L’Ecole Supérieure d’Art et de Design de Reims—home to one of the first culinary design programs in the world—and visit the distilleries, farms and vineyards of France’s Champagne region.

Film, Theater and Acting: Summer Program at the Ulysses Theatre on the Brijuni Islands in Croatia
July 15–29
Join in one of Europe’s premier theater and film festivals, located on the idyllic island of Mali Brijuni, where you will have the opportunity to work on productions and learn from masters of acting, directing, theater, and film.
