Department of Visual Arts

The UCSD Department of Visual Arts within the Division of Arts and Humanities at UC San Diego is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body.

The department seeks an artist who is deeply engaged with picture-making understood in the expanding field of contemporary painting practices. The candidate will embrace both new and traditional methods of painting and demonstrate a deep understanding of contemporary art as well as historical precedents and recent debates that have explored the limits of traditional formats and conventions.

The department is seeking to broaden and enrich its engagement with contemporary national and international painting practices. We seek awareness of the diverse roles played by painting practices, and their historical and intellectual contexts, including the impact of new technologies and materials in image production; the move of painting into public space, as in street and digital practices; the understanding of painting and drawing as cross- and inter-disciplinary practices; as well as the development of cutting-edge exhibitions in the established contexts provided by museums and galleries.

We seek candidates whose work and thinking demonstrate sustained engagement with the paradigms of painting by challenging, reworking or reformatting them; and whose work is creatively original and culturally relevant. Successful candidates will have developed critical strategies and/or research methodologies that promote social and intellectual inquiry; and their teaching, service or public outreach will have prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion in higher education.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to pedagogy. Faculty in all areas practice and instruction in the Visual Arts department are expected to serve both the MFA and PhD programs by giving critiques, supervising independent studies, mentoring and leading student research projects as well as serving on graduate committees. The department offers BA, MFA, and PhD (in both art history and art practice) degrees, and teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels is expected. Candidates should have a record of excellence in teaching, evidence of their understanding of academic responsibilities, and demonstrate potential for active university service.

Rank and salary commensurate with qualifications and experience based on UC pay scales.

Applications are only accepted electronically. To apply, please access RECRUIT, our electronic system, here.
