We are pleased to announce the opening of the fifth annual Degree Show of the Master of Arts in Fine Arts of the Zurich University of the Arts, which will take place on Sunday, September 21 at the Shedhalle in Zurich.

The Degree Shows of the past were events where young, emerging artists exhibited their work publicly for the first time. This has fundamentally changed in the recent years. Art students nowadays often present their work before they graduate in various exhibition settings. Their contributions greatly shape the independent and institutional art scenes in cities such as Zurich.

This year’s graduating class of the Master of Arts in Fine Arts of the ZHdK is particularly active in this context. The Degree Show exhibits, in a very paradigmatic and organic way, how the Kunsti (art school) is now embedded into the Swiss art scene. The young artists present their diverse artistic works and different contemporary practices confidently to the public. Visitors of this year’s Degree Show will perhaps even meet “old friends.”

Master Fine Arts Degree Show 2014 is curated by Alexandra Blättler and takes place for the third time in the institutional space of the Shedhalle. In the context of the exhibition, a series of public tours and other events organized by the MA students are planned.

A publication will be also be released at the opening of the exhibition, with a text by art critic professor Jan Verwoert (Academy of Fine Art Oslo), an introduction by the curator Alexandra Blättler and a discussion moderated by Daniel Morgenthaler (curator at Helmhaus Zurich and freelance journalist). Jelena Delic (Advisor Visual Arts at Pro Helvetia), Thomas Haemmerli (film director and author), Sabine Schaschl (director at Haus Konstruktiv) and Riikka Tauriainen (Künstlerin and ZHdK Master alumni) took part in this discussion. For the first time, three exemplary written theses of graduate students Cédric Eisenring, Narciso Banu and Florian Wegelin will also be presented in the publication.
