The MFA Art Practice program at the School of Visual Arts will be hosting an information session on Tuesday, December 2 from 6 to 8pm. Prospective students can tour the facilities and meet David A. Ross, the department Chair, as well as current faculty, participants and alumni. Register for the information session here.

Program
The Art Practice program offers a low-residency, cross-disciplinary approach to an MFA degree. In this post-conceptual, post-studio era, artists pursue their practice by engaging an idea first, and then developing a plan that may involve a combination of media, technologies and techniques. The MFA Art Practice program aims to create a global community of artists who feel secure in their ability to produce works of art using traditional and nontraditional media in both traditional and nontraditional settings.

To that end, a carefully selected, small group of MFA candidates come together at SVA’s NYC campus for three successive, intensive summer residency periods where they have the opportunity to work closely with artists, designers, writers, critics and curators in facilities that include a digital sculpture center, a bio-art lab, and video and sound editing facilities in addition to a wood shop, metals shop, ceramics studio and fibers lab.

In the intervening fall and spring semesters, participants engage in required, rich-media online coursework from all over the world.

Faculty members include David A. Ross, Suzanne Anker, Beth B, Dara Birnbaum, Kathy Brew, Eric and Heather ChanSchatz, Lia Gangitano, Laura F. Gibellini, Thyrza Nichols Goodeve, Johan Grimonprez, Daniel Kunitz, Alix Lambert, Steven Henry Madoff, Ernesto Pujol, Tim Rollins, Sarah Sharp, Gary Simmons, Stefan Saffer, Jovana Stokic, Mark Tribe, Carrie Mae Weems and Robin Winters.

Visiting artists, guest lecturers and mentors include Vito Acconci, Cory Arcangel, Charles Atlas, Alice Aycock, AA Bronson, Holland Cotter, Ben Davis, Dan Graham, Natalie Jeremijenko, Paddy Johnson,Tony Oursler, Izhar Patkin, Carolee Schneemann, Lorna Simpson and Cecilia Vicuña.
