Sierra Nevada College’s new Low-Residency MFA Interdisciplinary Arts program consists of two intensive, ten-day on-campus residencies during summer and winter sessions over the course of 2.5 years. During the fall and spring semesters, students will work in their home studios and continue relationships with faculty mentors and fellow colleagues via online communication modes such as email exchange, online seminars, blog contributions and other social media. Faculty for the MFA-IA program will include a rotating list of prestigious visiting artist faculty, made up of working artists and teachers from across the country as well as current members of the SNC-Fine Arts faculty.
Studying at Lake Tahoe allows access to the vast desert landscapes in Nevada and areas of the West. Icons and important precedents in Land Art history such as Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty; resources like those created by the Center For Land Use Interpretation, and the Center for Art + Environment; and outsider art like the Thunder Mountain Monument are all accessible. The Lake Tahoe area is in close proximity to the urban centers of Reno, San Francisco, Oakland, and the larger Bay Area. Residency periods of immersion in this landscape offer inspiration for program participants to create objects and projects that use aspects of their physical surroundings as linchpins for new ideas. Inviting students to take the time to focus on this specific place as a jumping-off point for thinking through place in general, literally and philosophically, is one of the program’s goals. Whether your practice includes fine art object-making, performance, film or video, or some combination of these, we invite you to conduct your experiments and research here. The MFA-IA is designed to sponsor critical dialogue and conversation that touches on art forms across fields of study.

From January 16 to February 27, the Garage Door and Tahoe Galleries will feature 20 international artists. This juried exhibition builds on the conversation of creative problem-solving and embodied place integral to the MFA-IA program.
The reception will be held Friday, February 27 from 6 to 9pm, with a panel discussion 7–8:30pm. Panel members include: Wendy Baroli of GirlFarm; Mary Rothlisberger and Geoffrey Holstad of Cabin-Time; Ignacio Chapela, UC Berkeley biologist; Jared Stanley, poet and writer; with Amy Franceschini of Futurefarmers as moderator. Subjects such as forming and mining community, conceptions of place (literal and poetic), relationships between art and science, the idea of the “artifact” and other related threads will be discussed. Come join us and contribute to what is sure to be a great conversation.
