Program description
The Department of Art’s interdisciplinary MFA program encourages students to work across disciplines with focus in areas of sculpture, photography, painting, drawing, printmaking, digital arts, ceramics, fibers, and jewelry and metalsmithing. The MFA program is a three-year course of study that involves rigorous studio art investigation, critical discourse, and conceptual development. Emphasis is placed on curriculum tailored to the needs of the individual student while encouraging exploration and risk-taking.

Approximately 30 students constitute a tight-knit community of MFA candidates. MFAs have frequent contact with professionally active faculty members, nationally and internationally recognized visiting artists and curators, and other relevant art professionals. Working intensively in independent studios on the Eugene campus, students benefit from the context of a world-class research university in the compelling Pacific Northwest. Awarded annually, Graduate Teaching Fellowships provide opportunities for significant financial support as well as teaching and professional experience.

Eugene, Oregon is a classic college town, with a metropolitan-area population of more than 200,000. You’ll find that Eugene is small enough to bike across, but large enough to offer galleries, music venues, and great restaurants to discover. Eugene has more working artists, writers, and musicians per capita than Portland. Outdoor recreation is key to the Eugene lifestyle, with rivers to run, mountains to snowboard, rocks to climb, trails to hike, and an ocean to surf, all within easy reach. Eugene is located in the center of western Oregon, about 100 miles south of Portland and halfway between the Pacific Ocean and the Cascade Mountains in the broad Willamette River Valley.
