This practice-based PhD program brings together candidates and leading academics from UTS’s School of Design in a transdisciplinary research cluster, led by professors Thea Brejzek and Lawrence Wallen. With a performative paradigm at its centre, this PhD program understands culture as performance rather than as text. It looks upon the city as a stage and upon cultural practice as constructed, dynamic and in flux. Cultural and design practices thus are seen as active agents in the social production of space.

Working across the disciplines of spatial design, architecture, theatre, exhibition and media, the program engages existing design and artistic competencies and applies them directly to questions of Design and Performative Practice. Suitable candidates may also apply to do a Joint PhD with the Technical University Berlin within the framework of this research cluster.

PhD proposals must relate to one or several of the program’s main research areas:
–Critical Practices: Performance, Design and the Politics of Space
–Sharing Space: Collaborative Practices in Curating, Design and Performance
–Staging the City: Performative Strategies and the Activation of Urban Space
Professors Thea Brejzek and Lawrence Wallen are currently supervising ten candidates in this research cluster, with six having recently completed.

For more information on this PhD program, visit the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building website.
