TheDepartment of Media Study (DMS) at the University at Buffalo is one of the country’s leading programs in experimental and independent media. We emerged at a time when no institutional framework dedicated to the study of media existed, and are renowned for our pioneering contributions to experimental film, video and sound art, media theory and practice. This spirit and approach has always remained integral to Media Study at Buffalo. Today, the department is led by an award winning, internationally active faculty who continue to probe media and its social implications in the widest context. We offer students exposure to an always evolving array of thematic foci ranging from screen culture to software studies, incorporating documentary and experimental film, video and sound, robotics, social media, gaming, interactive fiction, digital poetics and critical spatial practice. Come to Buffalo and see for yourself!

One of a small set of doctoral programs in experimental media theory and practice in the United States, the PhD in Media Study is for artists and thinkers looking to engage in research in and through the arts and to produce research artifacts at internationally competitive levels.

The MFA in Media Arts Production is one of the country’s leading programs in experimental and independent media. This program is most suitable for students who want to develop a sophisticated practice in the media arts.

The Media Arts and Architecture Program (MAAP)—a joint venture with the Department of Architecture—offers dual-degree options for students working at the interval between architecture and computational media.

MA in Social Media
The MA in Social Media is designed to equip students with the theoretical and analytical skills needed to critically analyze social media users, platforms and infrastructures using a wide-range of methods and frameworks.

MA in Film and Media Study
This interdisciplinary program is particularly suitable as a pre-PhD program for those transitioning from other fields. Students draw on faculty and resources from multiple departments in assembling their course of studies.
