SAKAE 401, the satellite campus of the Tottori University Faculty of Regional Sciences, will host the solo exhibition of contemporary artist Momoka Aiso from December 3 through 18, 2016.
Aiso presents Anime (Japanese animation) as the theme and subject matter of her works of art. She is considered to be one of the most significant young artists in Japan. Her artistic practice has been focused on recently on the cover of the popular Japanese art magazine, Bijutsu Techo as well as four consecutive issues of ART NAVI. Aiso’s works include paintings, drawings, and films. This exhibition will feature newly produced works on display for the first time in a large gallery space.
Momoka Aiso is a contemporary Japanese artist. Her major solo exhibitions include Shinjuku Ganka Gallery (Tokyo, 2015), Nao Nakamura Gallery (Tokyo, 2014). She has also participated in number of group exhibitions such as Chara-Crash! (Chaos*Lounge studio, 2014), and curated the group show Boys Love (2016). Tumblr
“Since the late 2000s, art works inspired by Otaku-culture led by pioneers such as Takashi Murakami (1962-) and Mr. (1969-) have been gaining popularity. This trend has the Japanese art scene with the emergence of Chaos*Lounge in 2008 following the challenges experienced by artist Tae Monma (1985-). Art inspired by Otaku-culture slightly weakened after the Tohoku Earthquake in 2011 but has since recovered and has paved the way for many new artists. Momoka Aiso is a distinctive artist among these followers as she strategically explores themes like ‘Anime’ and ‘characters’ as art, borrowing images from more commercialized form while being fully aware of the challenges of engaging Otaku-culture as art.” Bijutsu Techo, December 2016
