The lecture series DISCOURSES is part of the 3-month long exhibition project UNCERTAIN STATES – Artistic Strategies in States of Emergency, hosted by the Akademie der Künste, Berlin and the Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung (Federal Agency for Civic Education).
While diffuse fears of strangers as well as xenophobia, Islamophobia, and anti-Semitism are among the rising challenges facing Europe, the talks focuson the current pressing questions on the future of Europe: what is causing this new fundamentalism? How can increasing rightwing populism and racism in Europe be curtailed and overcome? What possibilities exist for living together peacefully? How can immigration policy be improved? How do we want to live together in the future? And what role does art have to play in coping with the crisis?
In 12 lectures, writers, commentators and prominent representatives of migration studies, political science, sociology, philosophy, and art scholarship will pose questions about Europe’s past and future, and try to develop new points of view—with Jochen Oltmer, Katharina Lumpp, Michael Lüders, Rita Süssmuth, Gesine Schwan, Nikita Dhawan, Claus Leggewie, Natasha A. Kelly, Horst Bredekamp and Stefan Weber, Armin Nassehi, Grada Kilomba, and Chantal Mouffe.
Each lecture will be accompanied and commented on by the young team from Polis180, the grassroots think tank for foreign and European policy. The emerging international scholars will challenge the established experts with critical questions in order to stimulate a dynamic exchange of perspectives. UNCERTAIN STATES – Artistic Strategies in States of Emergency
The exhibition project Uncertain States at the Akademie der Künste, Berlin from October 15, 2016 through January 15, 2017 combines an experiential space created from objects found in the Academy’s archives with an exhibition of contemporary art as well as a thinking space (Denkraum) for scholars, activists and artists.
