"The academy provides time and space to ask questions: What does my dream have to do with that of others?"
–Jan Verwoert, Tell Me What You Want, What You Really, Really Want. Sternberg Press/Piet Zwart Institute, 2011.

We like to think of the Academy of Fine Art in Oslo as a unique collective of singularities: artists from a variety of backgrounds, countries, fields, genders and generations come together to create what they believe to be the ideal space for the development of their practice. Artistic practice is at the core of the Academy of Fine Art’s education. We work across media, disciplines and approaches, dealing with formal or material concerns as much as post-conceptual, social or political issues. Our studies are organized into five areas: independent practice, focussing on studio work and individual tutorials; group critiques, where work is discussed collectively; issues in practice and theory, including annually changing thematic courses and study trips; writing practice, which includes artist writing and publishing; exhibition practice in our galleries on site and externally.
