Master Education in Arts
Two years, part-time, 60 ECTS

Piet Zwart Institute / Willem de Kooning Academy
The Piet Zwart Institute houses the international Master programmes of the Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences. The institute is named after the pioneering Dutch designer Piet Zwart, who worked experimentally across different media and contexts. Being part of the Willem de Kooning Academy, we offer a rich combination of in-depth specialization and interdisciplinary exchange in a vibrant learning environment. Students have access to an extensive range of facilities and workshops offered by the academy.

Research and Experimentation in Art and Design Education
The Master Education in Arts is a two-year part-time international research master. It has an interdisciplinary focus, allows for experimentation, is taught in English and accepts students from the Netherlands and within the EU at large. The programme explicitly connects theory and practice, focusing on contemporary issues that span different practices and discourses: education, pedagogy, art, design, cultural theory, digital cultures, philosophy, museum education, community arts and so forth.

The course is based on intensive seminars led by a dedicated group of educators, artists, designers and theorists. Our uniquely tailored curriculum combines collective learning with individual tutorials and practice-based research with theoretical inquiry. It is built around the concept of the learning practitioner, with an emphasis on critical reflection. Every participant develops an extensive individual research project (involving theoretical/artistic research as well as hands-on pedagogical experimentation) presented to the public at the end of the second year.

Profile
The curriculum is designed for educators in the field of secondary and higher art and design education, museum educators and artists and designers with a profound interest in pedagogical practices. We also welcome cultural professionals working both within and outside the institutional environment: workshops, labs, et cetera. Peer learning and being part of learning community, exchanging knowledge and experiences, is a key feature of our programme. The course prepares graduates to engage with formal educational structures as well as informal learning environments.
