Director, Graduate Studies, Criticism & Theory

The Graduate Program in Criticism and Theory focuses on the interdisciplinary analysis of art and design in the contexts of contemporary culture and media. It is an intensive writing program that forms the critical complement to Art Center’s practice-based graduate programs. Students have the unique opportunity to work with professional critics, scholars, artists, writers and designers, as well as to work alongside graduate students in these other programs. Graduates of the program are prepared for careers as critics and writers, and for positions in museums and publishing. They are also prepared to continue their studies in doctoral programs in art and design theory, criticism and history, as well as other fields of cultural studies.

The interdisciplinary writing-based program offers an opportunity to think beyond traditional academic categories, as it addresses art and design as key components in contemporary culture. This innovative approach is built on a foundational methods seminar that explores the history and theory of visual culture through an ongoing dialogue between two professors around a chosen theme. Students also participate in art and design studio courses through research and critique.

The six-term curriculum promotes writing and research in relation to diverse cultural practices. It is structured to offer students choice and flexibility in exploring their interests. Coursework is comprised of intensive writing workshops every term, seminars addressing diverse topics, one-on-one tutorials with professors of the student’s choice, interdisciplinary courses where theory meets practice in intensive critiques and research, and internships at Los Angeles museums and cultural institutions. Students are evaluated on a substantial writing portfolio at the end of the second and fourth terms, and the program culminates in a master’s thesis of original work focusing on a specific area of contemporary art or design.

Applicants to the program have diverse backgrounds in the arts and sciences, including literature, philosophy, art and design history, cultural studies and film. Students are admitted in the fall and spring terms. All students receive substantial funding.
