Fifth Annual PEN WORLD VOICES FESTIVAL OF INTERNATIONAL LITERATURE:
Evolution/Revolution
April 27 to May 3, 2009

BOOKFORUM invites you to an event on May 3, 2009.
Faith and Fiction with Benjamin Anastas, Nadeem Aslam, Brian Evenson, and Jan Kjærstad; moderated by Bookforum coeditor, Albert Mobilio

Religion and faith now exert an overwhelming influence on politics and culture. This panel will discuss some of the questions raised in writing contemporary fiction when religion plays a role: If fiction is make-believe and faith is must-believe, can writers reconcile the absolutes of religion with the ambiguities of character and the relative truths of storytelling? Can religion exist legitimately in a work of fiction and go unquestioned? How does the novelist serve two masters without compromising both?

When: Sunday, May 3, 2009: 1–2:30 p.m.
Where: powerHouse Arena, 37 Main Street, Brooklyn

Free and open to the public
Cosponsored by Bookforum and powerHouse Arena
