Located off the coast of Newfoundland in Canada, Fogo Island Arts supports artistic research and production for artists, curators, filmmakers, writers and designers from around the world. Fogo Island Arts programs include artist residencies, exhibitions and publications, and a series of think tank events called the Fogo Island Dialogues, held on Fogo Island and in other locations. All Fogo Island Arts initiatives are part of a social enterprise-based business model that supports the economic viability of the Fogo Island Inn and the growth of tourism on Fogo Island.

Residencies
Fogo Island Arts residencies provide opportunities for artists and thinkers from a wide range of disciplines to live and work on Fogo Island for periods ranging from three to six months. All participants in our Residency Program live in heritage houses; four off-the-grid studios designed by architect Todd Saunders are made available to artists-in-residence who have a studio-based practice. Situated at different locations around the island, the studios and artists’ homes help connect participants in our programs with the day-to-day lives of the Island’s local communities.

2013–2014 call for proposals
For its 2013–14 residencies, Fogo Island Arts is seeking proposals for projects to be produced within the organization’s Education Program. We welcome proposals from curators, artists, designers and art educators engaged in community-based practices that are sensitive to context.

Proposals should take into account the unique circumstances under which Fogo Island Arts carries out its programs. Fogo Island Arts is located on a small island in rural Newfoundland, and is an agency of the Shorefast Foundation, a Canadian registered charity dedicated to creating cultural and economic resiliency for the people of Fogo Island and Change Islands.

Deadline: May 31st, 2013, for residencies starting September 1st, 2013.
