Each year, the NYU Steinhardt MFA Studio Art program in the Department of Art and Art Professions brings together an exceptional group of committed artists from around the world to develop their work within a supportive community of faculty and colleagues, asking them to engage for two years in a process that is both intensely introspective as well as open to the challenges, issues, and concerns of the day. The class of 2013 is unique for having lived, observed, and worked through major jolts to the culture of New York art, from the Occupy Wall Street moment, the national reelection of President Barack Obama, the rise of the Internet as a viable alternative exhibition space for new art, to the damage wrested by Hurricane Sandy’s rage. Students in the program interrogate their individual practices and assumptions, as well as those of the global contemporary art world, each reinvigorating their work through careful consideration, daring, and alacrity. Please join us in the celebration of these two thesis exhibitions, representing the culmination of this process. A catalogue produced by the acclaimed graphic design team Women (Neil Doshi and Scott Barry), featuring the artists’ work with an accompanying essay by novelist Rick Moody will be available.MFA faculty include Derrick Adams, Jan Avgikos, Nancy Barton, Ross Bleckner, Jesse Bransford, Peter Campus, Sue DeBeer, Trisha Donnelly, Maureen Gallace, RoseLee Goldberg, Lyle Ashton Harris, Jennifer Krasinski, Kalup Linzy, Marlene McCarty, Kevin McCoy, Jack Pierson, Gerald Pryor, Adam Putnam, Judith Schwartz, Billy Sullivan, and John Torreano.
