New online course on multimedia art:
Catalysts: Artists Creating with Sound, Video, and Time
Registration now open, classes begin October 9

This immersive six-week course, taught by media artist and scholar Randall Packer, features avant-garde masterworks in performance, video, and sound by artists such as Marina Abramović, Bruce Nauman, Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, and Bill Viola, as well as exclusive behind-the-scenes interviews with MoMA curators Paola Antonelli, Klaus Biesenbach, and Barbara London. The course offers a unique opportunity for students to explore how artists, engineers, curators, and even the public have participated in the explosive emergence of new media forms in the past 50 years. Students also complete and discuss their own media projects each week and can earn a MoMA digital badge for successful participation using Credly. Offered as instructor-led only in fall 2013.

In this eight-week course, curators, conservators, and educators guide students in an exciting exploration of color dynamics in painting, sculpture, photography, design, and new media works in MoMA’s collection.

Five Puzzles of Contemporary Art
This five-week course explores how artists such as Cindy Sherman and Jeff Koons challenge common notions of “beauty” or expand our thinking about what is an “original.”

Experimenting with Collage
This eight-week virtual studio course allows students to learn how artists like Pablo Picasso, Joseph Cornell, and Robert Rauschenberg have been inspired to create MoMA masterworks in collage. Weekly studio demonstrations guide student experiments in this environment-friendly technique.

Materials and Techniques of Postwar Abstract Painting
This ten-week studio course introduces students to the great European and American artists of the post-World War II era. Students explore abstract compositions and examine the inspirations and challenges of artists like Jackson Pollock and Barnett Newman.

Modern Art, 1880–1945
This ten-week survey course introduces the origins of modern art and investigates the key works and major figures of early 20th-century art represented in the Museum’s world-renowned collection.

Modern and Contemporary Art: 1945–1989
Explore how the rise of consumer culture, feminism, and technological innovation is reflected in the art created after World War II in this ten-week course.

For five, six, eight, or ten weeks, students enjoy exclusive access to richly detailed videos, slide shows, audio, and readings, plus discussion forums that allows students to interact with an instructor and peers. 250­–350 USD; 200–300 USD for educators, students, MoMA members, and staff of other museums

Self-guided—at new reduced price, save 50 USD
A more independent learning experience offering the same content as the instructor-led course, without discussion forums or teacher guidance through the materials. 99–150 USD.
