Emiliano Valdés is the Chief Curator of the Museum of Modern Art in Medellín, Colombia. He is interested in art as a form of knowledge, the production of public programs, and the relationship between art and culture, and the natural environment. In 2014 he was Associate Curator for the 10th Gwangju Biennale and Co-Director of Proyectos Ultravioleta, an experimental platform for contemporary art in Guatemala City. For over five years he was Curator and Head of Visual Arts at the Centro Cultural de España in Guatemala where he developed an exhibition program that helped shape the country’s artistic scene. Valdés has also worked for institutions such as dOCUMENTA(13) in Kassel and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid. His writings have appeared in ArtNexus, Arte al Día, and FlashArt, as well as in numerous catalogs and books. His show The School of Nature and Principle opens April 10, at the EFA Artist Space in New York City.
Emiliano Valdés is a guest scholar of the Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Visiting Artists and Critics program. The program brings key figures from Latin America to Hunter College to address topics in contemporary art and scholarship through talks with students and the New York community. In addition to this forum, Cisneros Visiting Artists and Critics conduct studio visits and seminar discussions with Hunter MFA and MA students during their residency.
