From February 12 to 14 the Städelschule Frankfurt will host its annual student exhibition—Rundgang. During this three-day event, students from the classes of internationally acclaimed faculty members such as Ben van Berkel, Johan Bettum, Peter Fischli, Douglas Gordon, Judith Hopf, Michael Krebber, Tobias Rehberger, Willem de Rooij and Amy Sillman, will open their studios to the public. Works will be shown on the two main campuses in Dürerstrasse and Daimlerstrasse, Frankfurt; the Curatorial & Critical Studies Program will conduct a series of talks with artists and curators at the school’s lecture hall; video artists and filmmakers show recent productions in the Deutsche Filmmuseum and the Architecture Class students exhibit in their classrooms. With over 190 students in total presenting their work, the Rundgang has become one of Frankfurt’s most prominent art events.

The Städelschule was founded in 1817 and figures amongst the foremost art academies in the world, offering degrees in fine art, architecture and curatorial critical studies. Its faculty, also including Daniel Birnbaum, Isabelle Graw and Philippe Pirotte, attracts a distinct international student body. Furthermore, guest professors, external lecturers and visiting tutors have supported and developed a diverse range of teaching formats. Visiting faculty in 2015/16 includes guest professors Mark von Schlegell and Shahryar Nashat. Seminars and lectures were conducted by Sarah Schulman, Jonas Mekas, Jana Euler, Dora Garcia, Eileen Myles and Oliver Laric. For the Architecture Class, guest professors Mirco Becker, Peter Trummer and Holger Hoffmann head specializations, and Beatriz Colomina and Mark Wigley held seminars.

A unique feature of Städelschule is its Kunsthalle Portikus, an institution for contemporary art in Frankfurt am Main. Since its foundation in 1987, Portikus is dedicated to exhibit, publish and discuss young and emerging as well as established artists. During Rundgang, Portikus will host Earshot, the first solo exhibition by Lebanese artist Lawrence Abu Hamdan in Germany, which will open on Friday, February 12 at 8pm.

Lawrence Abu Hamdan: Earshot
In his art and research, Lawrence Abu Hamdan explores the perception of language and sound and the politics of listening. His projects have taken the form of audiovisual installations, performances, graphic works, photography, Islamic sermons, cassette tape compositions, potato chip packets, essays, and lectures. Discourses of national identity, human rights, and the administration of justice are recurrent themes in his art, and the techniques of his audio-aesthetic practice have become the basis through which he has become known as a “private ear,” conducting forensic audio analysis for several legal investigations. At Portikus, he has created an installation encompassing sound, photographic prints, and a video to reflect more broadly on the aesthetics of evidence and the politics of sound and silence.

“Water-Cooler-Talks”
Guests: Vivien Trommer, Sean Lynch, and current Städelschule art students.
Students of Curatorial & Critical Studies invite artists and curators for the talk series. During the talks an overall question is asked about what takes place behind closed doors: What are the procedures and thoughts that precede the moment of materialization and presentation? Exactly the concealed and non-public is the focal point of the discussions and an attempt will be made to link these to an understanding of artistic and curatorial practices that structure the contemporary art world(s).

3pm
Conversation
Willem de Rooij & Philippe Pirotte will share thoughts about Piet Mondrian and two recent installations of De Rooij. For the Vincent Award (2014) at the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, De Rooij installed Mondrian’s painting Lighthouse at Westkapelle in Brown with the soundscape Ilulissat featuring howling Greenland sleigh-dogs. De Rooij’s installation Character Is Fate (2015) at Witte de With in Rotterdam, showcased an astrological birth chart Piet Mondrian had made in 1911. A special display system that related to the solar calendar allowed for the birth chart to be illuminated by the sun.
