From April 12 to 17 the Royal Academy of Art The Hague presented its experimental and interdisciplinary exhibition RESET at the Salone del Mobile in Milan. In the intimate environment of a private penthouse in the heart of Ventura Lambrate, the exhibition received more than 23,000 visitors to its programme of performances, installations and design discussions. In this exclusive setting, the international press, art and design professionals and the general public mingled together. The show was a collaboration by 20 young artists and designers—all students and alumni from the Royal Academy. Alice Rawsthorn, the International New York Times‘ design critic, congratulated the academy on its successful presentation and Another Magazine named RESET a trendsetter for 2016.
Accompanying the exhibition, top names from the sector came together during the Afternoon Resets: design critic and curator Angela Rui spoke to architecture and design curator Maja Vardjan and artistic director of Z33 Jan Boelen about a future design fair echoing the theme of RESET. Ernst van der Hoeven and Kirsten Algera from MacGuffin Magazine invited “ex-ex-designers” Lernert & Sander to talk about their new ambitions as designers. Martina Muzi and Tamar Shafrir from Space Caviar entered into a dialogue with RESET visitors at a Domestic Design Jam Session. In addition, for the first time at RESET, the European Design Parliament met for a round table discussion to give form to a new and influential actor in the European design scene. The Dutch Ambassador in Rome, Joep Wijnands, visited the exhibition with a delegation led by the Creative Industries Fund NLand spoke with students and curators.

RESET at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2016
Under the professional guidance of a curatorial team comprising (guest) lecturers of the Royal Academy of Art The Hague, a collective of students and alumni delved into the notion of “RESET.”
They approached this dynamic theme and format each from their own artistic practice, all the while combining and borrowing strategies from other art and design disciplines.
RESET is an immersive show that is in a constant state of transition from day to day. Participants and performers are experimenting in front of the visitors, reacting to the given space with in situ elements, building and dismantling, turning perspectives, testing new possibilities and expanding notions of the unfinished and the undefined. Visiting the apartment is both a physical and poetical experience: one all guests will remember.
RESET metaphorically explores the necessity of a complete reset in addressing current societal urgencies, such as the sustainability of our political and economic system, the effects of technological innovations and the impact of design and art on our daily life. The show aims at a RESET of disciplinary borders through collaborative processes boldly expressed in our motto: design=collaboration.
