The Harry Ransom Center, a humanities research library and museum at The University of Texas at Austin, invites applications for its 2017–18 research fellowships. More than 50 fellowships will be awarded for projects that require substantial on-site use of the Ransom Center’s collections, supporting research in all areas of the humanities, including photography.
The Center’s photography collection includes the earliest camera photograph known to be extant, created in 1826 or 1827 by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce; the renowned Gernsheim collection of historical photographs; and holdings of such 20th century photographers as Edward Steichen, Man Ray, Walker Evans, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, and Danny Lyon, among many others. The Ransom Center also houses the Magnum Photos collection as well as the archives of Elliott Erwitt, David Douglas Duncan, Arnold Newman, Anne Noggle, and others.
Each year the Marlene Nathan Meyerson Photography Fellowship Endowment, David Douglas Duncan Endowment for Photojournalism, and Arnold Newman Fellowship in Photography support projects that engage the Center’s photography collection.
The fellowships range from one to three months, with stipends of 3,000 USD per month. Also available are 1,200 USD to 1,700 USD travel stipends and dissertation fellowships with a 1,500 USD stipend. Fellowship residencies may be scheduled between June 1, 2017, and August 31, 2018. During the fellowship, scholars will work on-site at the Ransom Center in Austin, Texas.
The deadline for applications, which must be submitted through the Ransom Center’s website, is November 15, 2016, 5pm CST. All applicants, with the exception of those applying for dissertation fellowships, must have a PhD or be independent scholars with a substantial record of achievement.
