The European League of Institutes of the Arts (ELIA) is pleased to announce the 14th ELIA Biennial Conference. Register now and join us in the magnetic and beautiful city of Florence.
The ELIA Biennial Conference is the largest conference on higher arts education worldwide, drawing an audience of approximately 500 directors, artists and academics in all art disciplines. Host of this years’ biennial is Palazzo Spinelli, in partnership with many other arts and higher arts education institutions of the city of Florence.
Theme: “Turn Mirrors into Windows”
Europe has transformed almost beyond recognition over the past years. Thanks to technological evolution, globalisation and open border policies, we find ourselves working and living in close connection to the rest of the world. At the same time Europe’s self-conception as a place of tolerance, inclusion and prosperity is increasingly challenged by complex issues such as large migration processes, an aging population, emerging radicalism and shifting economic powers. What do we see when we look at ourselves, our institutions, and the world? To what extent do we adapt, make use of or even contribute to the challenges and opportunities presented? And how shall we move forward?
“Turn Mirrors into Windows” provides a platform to discuss these questions and consider the role artists, arts educators and arts education institutions have in the creation of tomorrow’s society. Florence, as a beacon of European cultural heritage and with its turbulent political and artistic history, is the ideal city to have this conversation.
Programme
The ELIA Biennial offers a diverse range of programming in a dynamic atmosphere that stimulates intellectual exchange and professional networking.
Highlights of the programme include plenary sessions—presenting high profile keynote speakers from around the world, panel, pecha kucha and thematic sessions—opening dialogue on key issues in higher arts education between field experts and delegates; mobile sessions—exploring and engaging with the creative heart of Florence; table talks—fostering close connections between delegates through small group discussions; and even a “blind date” dinner—creating an informal space for match made networking. In addition, the open space provides a non-curated platform for ELIA Partners and Members to showcase and share their own practices.
