The School of Art, Design and Media (ADM) at Nanyang Technological University Singapore (NTU), in collaboration with the NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore (NTU CCA Singapore), offers programmes leading to a Master of Art (Research) degree and a Doctor of Philosophy degree. These postgraduate degrees are pioneering programmes in Southeast Asia, dedicated to the research focus of “Spaces of the Curatorial”, “Curating the City”, as well as suggested topics by the prospective candidates that relate to the Centre’s mandate.

These programmes will allow MA students and PhD candidates to pursue interdisciplinary research within the framework of contemporary critical discourse in the expanded field of contemporary art. Under this umbrella, candidates will engage with current developments in art infrastructures, knowledge production, archival practices, spaces of presentation and representation in Singapore and Southeast Asia.

Students of the programme will be supervised and taught by an internationally diverse faculty of ADM including Professor Ute Meta Bauer, Founding Director of NTU CCA Singapore (Spaces of the Curatorial); Associate Professor Laura Miotto (Exhibition Design); and Assistant Professor Michelle Lim (Contemporary Curating). Incoming professorships in “Curatorial Practice” and “Art in Public Space and Critical Spatial Practice” further diversify the ADM faculty. Students will pursue research in close proximity to the Centre’s network of Artists-, Curators-, and Writers-in-Residence as well as to local and regional art communities. There will be multiple opportunities for students to partake in curatorial and research projects, exhibitions, symposia and other programmes at the NTU CCA Singapore, at ADM / NTU, and at other affiliated institutions in Singapore and Southeast Asia.

NTU CCA Singapore seeks applicants from diverse backgrounds with a strong interest in the expanded field of curating and/or in the art ecosystems of Southeast Asia. Applicants should be independent, self-driven, and interested in taking part in the defining phase of this new area of study offered by ADM / NTU in collaboration with the Centre. The two-year MA (Research) as well as the PhD programmes culminate in the preparation of a written thesis; alternatively candidates may choose to produce a project accompanied by a shorter thesis.

Admission is based on:
–A statement of intent
–A research proposal
–Samples of academic writing
–Documentation of (curatorial) projects
–Academic transcripts
–Report from two academic referees
