The Rutgers MFA program was established in 1960 as the first non-disciplinary specific fine art graduate program in the USA. Over the course of the two-year full time program, artists have the opportunity to focus fully on their practice within a stimulating and supportive community of peers and faculty. All students receive spacious private studios that are accessible 24/7 for the full length of the program. The Rutgers campus is less than an hour from New York City.
All accepted students receive Mason Gross Visual Arts Graduate Fellowships. The purpose of the fellowships is to democratize access for all of our graduate students. In their first year, all students receive fellowships equivalent to out-of-state tuition. In their second year, domestic students receive fellowships equivalent to in-state tuition and international students receive fellowships equivalent to out-of-state tuition.
Teaching and mentorship opportunities allow artists to broaden their experience in the field. Each year, students collectively choose 20 visiting artists who spend a day on studio visits ending with a public lecture of their work. Graduate students have a number of opportunities to exhibit and curate work in the school’s 4,000 sq. ft. galleries, installation and performance spaces. Following the Spring Thesis exhibition in New Brunswick, graduate students show their artwork in a New York City venue.
