Our research programmes are designed for artists, curators and art writers who would like to explore and develop their understanding of practice and contribute to its wider public context through original critical work.

We develop Art and Curating PhDs through practice-based and non-practice-based routes. We offer an interdisciplinary environment for research in which ideas are tested and challenged, and in which artists, curators and writers work alongside each other in an atmosphere of rigorous formal and conceptual experimentation. With a dedicated team of core faculty made up of international experts and within the broader context of Goldsmiths as a leading research university, our PhD programmes provide an opportunity to place your artistic or curatorial work in dialogue with the work of other practitioners, be they cultural workers or philosophers, sociologists, anthropologists, or political scientists. The PhD invites you to develop your project in both a contemporary and historical perspective.

We provide all full-time Art Research students with an individual studio or workspace. All students have access to the Department of Art’s 11 specialist research laboratories, ranging from metalwork, casting, print and fabric to physical computing and state-of-the-art AV processing.

In addition to close supervisory support for individual projects, the programme also provides regular seminars, skills workshops and opportunities to exhibit and share work. We also hold annual research symposia. These are often organized in partnership with other disciplines at Goldsmiths and elsewhere. Recent symposia have included:

“On Oblique and Frontal Strategies for Existence on a Finite Plane,” led by Joseph Schneider and Kristien Van den Brande, guests including Michael Dutton, Juan Ordóñez, Ian Verstegen

Aminate Assembly,” a series of symposia in 2015–16 led by Edgar Schmitz and Verina Gfader, guests including Esther Leslie, Miltos Manetas, WJT Mitchell, Aylish Wood

“Choreographic,” an ongoing series of symposia led by Edgar Schmitz, guests including Mårten Spångberg, Jalal Toufic
