The University of Fine Arts Hamburg (HFBK) is an institution of higher education in the arts and their theory. With its wide range of subjects, the HFBK offers the opportunity to study interdisciplinarily and to qualify both in the arts practice and in theoretical domains. Students work in studios and are extensively supported by art and theory tutors in seminars as well as in individual and group tutorials. The aim of studies is to enable students to raise new issues in all artistic disciplines and to achieve innovative solutions. A central role is given to engagement with topics chosen by students themselves and project-related and experimental working methods.
Bachelor/Master-Study Programs and Doctorate
The HFBK’s consecutive Bachelor and Master study programs comprises all of the artistic and theoretical subjects which can be found in the different departments as followed: Sculpture, Stage Design, Design, Film, Graphic Art/Typography/Photography, Painting/Drawing, Theory and History, Time-based Media.
Students with the Bachelor Degree are free to decide whether to take classes in several departments or in a single one. This open structure guarantees maximum flexibility and allows students to determine the content of their studies in art and/or theory themselves. The regular amount of time needed to complete this degree is 8 semesters.
With its Masters degree, the HFBK offers students a course of study centred around the student’s own planned artistic and/or theoretical development, allowing issues of interest, working methods and processes to be critically analysed, deepened and to become differentiated. The regular amount of time needed to complete this degree is 4 semesters.
Through this, “Dr. phil. in art.” doctorate can be achieved. The HFBK supervises dissertations, which engage with art-theoretical or philosophical concepts relating to analysis of the arts and addressing their essential nature. One can register either for research based on practice and a written element, or for research by written thesis only.

Application
Applications may only be made for the winter semester of each academic year, usually beginning in October. The application period for the academic year 2010/2011 ends on March 5, 2010. Students transferring from other universities apply in the same way as beginning students. International applicants are most welcome to send their portfolio to the HFBK Hamburg. The application and selection process is practically the same for foreigners as it is for German applicants. There are however some additional documents to be submitted, such as translations of certificates, and the proof of proficiency in German.
International student exchanges
The HFBK actively supports international student exchanges. The large number of partner universities included in the EU’s exchange program Erasmus – Lifelong Learning enables a high degree of international mobility. The proportion of students at the HFBK who come from abroad, not only from Europe, but from other regions, especially China, Korea and South America, is traditionally very high. This lively dialogue is supported by further University-owned initiatives.
