Chair, Humanities and Design Sciences
Overview of the Position:
Art Center College of Design invites applications for the position of Chair of the Humanities and Design Sciences Department (HDS). The Chair is responsible for all aspects of the direction and management of the department, which comprises over 60 faculty members who teach more than 120 classes each term. The primary purpose of HDS is to support Art Center’s studio-based, transdisciplinary, undergraduate degree programs in Advertising, Entertainment Design, Environmental Design, Film, Fine Art, Graphic Design, Illustration, Photography, Product Design, and Transportation Design, and in some instances to work in conjunction with Art Center’s graduate programs in Art, Broadcast Cinema, Industrial Design, and Media Design. The position comes with administrative support and faculty directors in focused curricular areas.
The Chair’s job is to oversee the Department’s pedagogy in design research, writing, art and design history, humanities, and the social and physical sciences; to further develop the integration of HDS content into studio classes; and to expand the academic HDS curriculum independent of studio work. The HDS Chair must also be able to work closely with the chairs of the studio programs in pursuit of the former goal, while advancing a curriculum within HDS that provides Art Center students with a liberal arts education comparing favorably with that of any art school or university art or design department in the United States.
In addition to those already mentioned, the HDS Chair’s responsibilities include significant outreach functions, with a view to developing strong bonds with other academic, art, and design institutions. Candidates should have an accomplished background in academia, administration, and teaching with a substantial record of achievement in his/her field, including exhibition, curatorial, publishing or research. They should have a broad knowledge of modern and contemporary art, design, media and the other humanities. Finally, they should possess good interpersonal and communication skills.
